Theuseofherbalmedicinalproductsandsupplementshasincreasedtremendouslyoverthepastthreedecadeswithnotlessthan80%ofpeopleworldwiderelyingonthemforsomepartofprimaryhealthcare.Althoughtherapiesinvolvingtheseagentshaveshownpromisingpotentialwiththeefficacyofagoodnumberofherbalproductsclearlyestablished,manyofthemremainuntestedandtheiruseareeitherpoorlymonitoredornotevenmonitoredatall.Theconsequenceofthisisaninadequateknowledgeoftheirmodeofaction,potentialadversereactions,contraindications,andinteractionswithexistingorthodoxpharmaceuticalsandfunctionalfoodstopromotebothsafeandrationaluseoftheseagents.Sincesafetycontinuestobeamajorissuewiththeuseofherbalremedies,itbecomesimperative,therefore,thatrelevantregulatoryauthoritiesputinplaceappropriatemeasurestoprotectpublichealthbyensuringthatallherbalmedicinesaresafeandofsuitablequality.Thisreviewdiscussestoxicity-relatedissuesandmajorsafetyconcernsarisingfromtheuseofherbalmedicinalproductsandalsohighlightssomeimportantchallengesassociatedwitheffectivemonitoringoftheirsafety.
